Student hits back at ‘feminist’ prof who docked essay grade for using ‘sexist’ word ‘mankind’
Student questions ‘feminist’ prof who docked essay grade for using ‘sexist’ word ‘mankind’ University of Northen Arizona
A Northern Arizona University student was recently docked a point on an essay because her English professor didn’t like that she used the word “mankind.” Instead, the professor told the student to use “gender-neutral” language.
According to Campus Reform:
Cailin Jeffers, an English major at NAU, told Campus Reform that she received an email from one of her professors, Dr. Anne Scott, informing her that she had been docked one point out of a possible 50 on a recent paper for “problems with diction (word choice)” related to her use of the word “mankind” as a synonym for “humanity.”
“I would be negligent, as a professor who is running a class about the human condition and the assumptions we make about being ‘human,’ if I did not also raise this issue of gendered language and ask my students to respect the need for gender-neutral language,” Scott explained. “The words we use matter very much, or else teachers would not be making an issue of this at all, and the MLA would not be making recommendations for gender-neutral language at the national level.”
Now Jeffers is hitting back. Speaking with Fox News host Tucker Carlson on his show Friday, Jeffers explained that her professor told her the word “mankind” is “sexist” and “has a history of holding women down.”
“Apparently [the word] isn’t to her liking,” Jeffers said, explaining that Scott didn’t offer any proof that using the word was incorrect.
“Apparently she thought I should be punished [for using the word],” she added.
Then Carlson offered Jeffers a scenario to prove Scott’s point deduction was a political decision and not based on any real English standards: If a student wore a burka to Scott’s class because her family told her she wasn’t allowed to show her hair around men, would Scott declare that sexist, too?
“She wouldn’t say a thing about it,” Jeffers said almost immediately.
“I have no idea why feminists are obsessing over tiny, little microaggressions such as issues like how the word ‘mankind’ is used when there are women living under Sharia law who are actually oppressed by an actual patriarchy,” Jeffers said.
