Republican billionaire donor Betsy DeVos, President-elect Donald Trump’s choice to become the next education secretary, offered self-avowed socialist Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) an economics lesson during her Senate confirmation hearing.

DeVos has been a longtime proponent of school choice and education voucher programs, having herself attended a Christian high school and Christian college in her home state of Michigan. DeVos’ critics, however, point to her lack of experience in public education as a potential downfall.

During Tuesday night’s hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, Sanders highlighted another area that he and other DeVos critics have made a top political issue in recent years: “free” college tuition. Asked if she would be willing to work with Sanders to help make “free” tuition possible, DeVos made it very clear that’s just a fantasy.

“Senator, I think that’s a really interesting idea and it’s really great to consider and think about, but I think we also have to consider the fact that there’s nothing in life that’s truly free,” DeVos said. “Somebody’s going to pay for it.”

Throughout the Democratic presidential primary, Sanders vowed to make college “tuition-free” so that every family in American can afford higher education. Further, he promised to make the wealthiest Americans foot the bill through substantially higher taxes.
